Taumarunui — Mountains to Sea Great Ride (3-4 hours, 45km)
From the Taumarunui Domain, this route heads south crossing the Whanganui River on to Hikumutu Road. The route offers an enjoyable back-country experience, passing through picturesque farmland and a couple of scenic reserves.
At the halfway mark, cyclists can opt to deviate 1km to visit the the town of Owhango to rest, stay overnight, or purchase supplies. From there, head back along Kawautahi Road, riding southwest all the way to Oio Road, where this route connects with the Mountains to Sea cycle trail – one of the Great Rides of Nga Haerenga – The New Zealand Cycle Trail.
Buses and the Overlander train go to Taumarunui.
Once you have reached Oio Road, the nearest accommodation is a further 20km of easy down-valley riding along the Mountains to Sea cycle trail, to the tourist settlement of Whakahoro.
