The ALPS 2 OCEAN Cycle Trail (A20 Cycle Trail) stretches over 300kms from Aoraki/MT Cook Village. through the magnificent Mackenzie Basin and down the Waitaki Valley, to end at Oamaru by the Pacific Ocean.
Apparently no longer content for more leisurely pursuits, those in their 50s 60s and 70s are donning lycra and taking to the saddle for epic rides around New Zealand. One of the grandest of New Zealand great cycle rides is the 306km ALPS 2 OCEAN Cycle Trail (A20)
This is New Zealand at its finest in all it colour and beauty: from the highest mountains, past great lakes,and rivers, down to the ocean. Starting at Aoraki/Mt Cook (helicopter crossing required), or at Lake Tekapo ( no helicopter required), the trail crosses spectacular countryside before fetching up in quaint and arty seaside town of Oamaru.
The Alps 2 Ocean offers an adventure for all walks of life-for the foodies try the delicious alpine salmon along the way- you can even catch yourself! the trail journeys down through the Waitaki wine region where you can sample various local wines. and to finish, treat yourself to an award-winning cheese or two with a tasting accompanied by a factory tour in Oamaru.
For the trill seekers, add a helicopter or ski plane over the glaciers to your itinerary to get the adrenalin pumping before starting your journey. Take a break from the bike seat in Omarama and experience the breath-taking scenery from a glider or shoot over the Waitaki River weaving through the braids on a jet boat.
Take in the incredible natural sights and history. Experience the surreal feeling of walking through the Clay Cliffs-like you’re walking into the set of a wild west movie. Follow the fossil trail through Duntroon and discover the enormity of the Elephant rocks. Marvel at how the land has changed over the years and formed suck unique geology in the Waitaki region.

On completion of the trail don’t miss the opportunity to discover Oamaru. Many cyclists regret racing off at the end when they realise the beauty of the Victorian architecture, the quirkiness of steampunk, not to mention the cuttest little residents. the Blue Penguins. Take your time to celebrate your achievement by relaxing in Oamaru-just what the doctor ordered. One of the positive aspects of the trail is that it can be enjoyed on almost any budget: from the basic backpacker through to five-star luxury lodges. It’s entirely up to you on how much to spend. The trailitself is free to ride. Although purchasing a 10 trail supporters wristband is encouraged. The profits from the wristbands are used for trail maintenance and improvements.
The trail is made of nine sections. Some are easy, others require a higher level of fitness. We recommend you take a look at the trail maps to gain and understanding of gradiant and skill and fitness required for each section. If you aren’t fit and experienced cyclist at the start, you will be when you reach the finish! In all seriousness it is recommended to do some decent rides before tackling the A20 and allow yourself 6-8 days for the full journey.
